ITS-CUBE as best practice at polisMOBILITY 2024

LSBG Presents Innovative Solutions

Prioritising buses is intended to encourage a shift to public transport.

On 22 May, Hamburg presented ITS-CUBE as a best practice at polisMOBILITY. The conference is aimed at experts from the public sector and provides information on innovations in the field of sustainable mobility.

The goal of ITS-Cube is to support the modal shift to public transport with a future-proof system for prioritising buses. Project manager Bernd Schober presented the technical elements of Hamburg's transition to Co-operative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) and explained LSBG's plans for the project, which will trigger investment in up to 2,000 buses and 600 intersections with ITS technology by 2030.

He also noted the role of European Investment Bank ELENA funding in enabling the preparation of the prioritisation system. The €1,946,250 secured from the EIB is enabling Hamburg to prepare the technical and system requirements for a proposed €64m investment programme.

Bernd Schober presented Hamburg’s work alongside mobility initiatives from Baden-Württemberg, Aachen, Leipzig and Bonn.

“polisMOBILITY was a valuable opportunity to share our work with other public mobility departments” said Schober. “As we test one of the first uses of C-ITS for public transport in Germany, ITS-CUBE aims to be a reference point for other cities looking for a future-proof bus prioritisation system.”
